Small Group Questions - Weekend of February 7

Group Opener:

Was there ever a time you were obsessed with someone or something? (For example, a movie, a person, a diet, a class.)

Group Questions:

  1. What are the things in our culture or in our personal lives that tend to grab our attention? How do these things affect the way we interact with other people?

  1. Read Colossians 3:1-4. What are we to set our minds (i.e., attention) on? What does that mean? What reason does Paul give for our doing this?

  1. How might doing this affect the way we are living (our commitments, our attitude, our families, our work, etc)?

  1. Read Colossians 3:5-11. What behavior/sin are we to “put to death” or “prune”? Why is it so important for us to remove these things from our lives?

  1. What would it look like to prune those behaviors? How can we do that?

  1. Read Colossians 3:12-15. What are we to “put on”? Or, to stick with our metaphor, what “seeds are we to sow”?

  1. Read Colossians 3:16-17. Paul identifies several ways for us to “sow this seed.” What are they? Do any of them correlate with the spiritual disciplines? Which ones?

8.       The things we pay attention to often drive our thoughts and behavior. Again, we reap what we sow. Ask God to show you the things that are taking your attention away from Him. Are you willing to give those up or change the way you look at them?

Prayer Time:

What are some specific ways we can be praying for each other? Take a few minutes to share your prayer requests with each other.

Share some of the things you have been worrying about/focusing on lately. Pray for each other, that you would be able to focus on Christ and trust Him with those things.

Notes for your prayer time:

There is nothing wrong with praying for each other’s requests and you can continue to do so.  It is easy however to pray for all kinds of things that aren’t related to applying God’s truth to our lives.

My desire is to make sure we have some of our prayers focused around the life-change God desires to take place in each of us.  Scott Nieveen

Thanks for the role you play in providing a place for people to experience community while pursuing God!
