Small Group Questions - Weekend of January 31

Group Opener:

Who are the “wise” people in our culture? Who does our culture turn to for answers?

Group Questions:

  1. What is challenging about accepting wisdom and counsel from others? Does it make a difference if you seek counsel, rather than it just being “handed to you”?

  1. Read Proverbs 13:20. What does this proverb teach us about how our relationships influence our lifestyle? Why is it important for us to invite other people to speak into our lives?

  1. Do you have anyone in your life that fills that role for you – offering counsel, warning you if they see you heading down the wrong path, etc? What does that look like? How do you interact with each other?

  1. Read Proverbs 2:1-16. Where does it come from? How can we get wisdom? What is it good for? When we have wisdom, we will understand “every good path” (vs. 9).

  1. Read James 3:13-18. How does James describe godly wisdom? How do we demonstrate wisdom?

  1. Wisdom is considered a spiritual gift (see 1 Corinthians 12:8). Do others see you as a wise person? How can these individuals use their gift to help build and encourage the Church?

  1. Re-read verse 18. What “reap what you sow” principle is given here? What seeds can we need to sow to reap wisdom?

Prayer Time:

What are some specific ways we can be praying for each other? Take a few minutes to share your prayer requests with each other.

James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” As you spend time in prayer, think about (and share, if you’re comfortable doing so) difficult decisions or situations you are facing. Ask Him for the wisdom you need. He may provide it through the Scripture, or He may put someone in your path who can offer wise counsel.

Notes for your prayer time:

There is nothing wrong with praying for each other’s requests and you can continue to do so.  It is easy however to pray for all kinds of things that aren’t related to applying God’s truth to our lives.

My desire is to make sure we have some of our prayers focused around the life-change God desires to take place in each of us.  Scott Nieveen

Thanks for the role you play in providing a place for people to experience community while pursuing God!
